Dunkley's restaurant in Castle Ashby, Northamptonshire
Surrounded by the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside , at the site of the former Castle Ashby Rail Station roughly 15 minutes’ drive east of Northampton town centre, is Dunkley’s Restaurant. The station was closed 1964 and demolished quickly afterwards but the goods shed, which dates back to 1858 was left standing and, after being lovingly restored and extensively refurbished by John Dunkley, now houses Dunkley’s Restaurant. The restaurant has been sensitively restored and highlights many of the buildings original features such as the exposed brick walls. John has also sourced a number of railway artefacts including a crest from the Royal train and no less than two vintage rail carriages to give guests a truly authentic dining experience. The two carriages, which sit on specially laid tracks alongside the restaurant, further enhance the atmosphere of this unique restaurant. The carriages provide additional space for diners and are ideal for private parties looking for a really special occasion. With several other dining rooms available including the coffee cart which is suitable for groups of up to 50, a mezzanine floor and the main dining room on the ground floor, Dunkley’s is able to cater for all parties, big or small. Dunkley’s offers a set menu for any time of the day, whether you are dropping in for an impromptu lunch or a lingering evening meal, so you can rest assured that whenever you visit, it won’t break the bank. You can expect to find a good selection of Modern British dishes, some of which have subtle French influences, on the menu. Options include venison casserole with baby onions, mushrooms and lardons of bacon in a rich jus; freshly made shortcrust steak and ale pie served with creamy mash and a rich gravy; and poached supreme of salmon in a lobster, prawn and white sauce. With several vegetarian options available and a specially crafted child’s menu that will keep the little ones happy, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Dunkley’s. Serving a Sunday roast that guests travel miles for, Dunkley’s is an incredibly popular venue with Northampton residents and visitors alike and it’s no wonder as to why. Dunkley’s is a stunning and completely unique venue that serves delicious food at incredibly reasonable prices. What’s not to love?

Friendly staff, good service, nice mix of ages of customers, we were not left long periods of time unatteneded or waiting for courses. Good quality food nicely presented. We will go again.

We had a lovely meal here, plenty of it and the service was very good. My only criticism would be that the restaurant was very cold, could have done with some heating on. Would definitly go back again, we all really enjoyed it.

Having recently dined twice before and enjoyed the food and ambience we decided to take a friend with us on this occasion. We all had the fillet steak which was cooked to perfection for all our tastes. The food was excellent, service was very good. Where we were seated lent very little light into the area and almost felt we were intruding at a party as there was only one other large table in the room besides our own occupied by about 14 diners. However, congratulations on providing another superb meal. Well worth visiting again.

Portions were small and not value for money, my liver was over cooked and quite hard. One meal was just warm. We were not asked if we were happy with our meal.

Food was good, great starter of melon sorbet and small compote of mixed fruit, main course roast beef and veg. Veg was cooked beautifully, beef was overdone for me and a little fatty... Pudding was a toffee lumpy bumpy pud which consisted of a caramel mousse like topping on a sponge base accompanied by another type of mousse with chocolate sauce - surprisingly light and scrummy. The service was good, unfortunately the overall lighting was poor and was not conducive to eating good food or appreciating the presentation.

I have eaten at many top restaurants but nowhere has given me a fillet steak as beautiful as Dunkley’s. However, the menu is a little on the small side but good quality nonetheless. We sat in the old carriage which is part of the seating area which was a fantastic experience. It was generally a happy outing which will keep us going back.
